FATAL Error while attempting to upgrade

  • I was in the process to upgrading WP to 3.4.2 and once I started the update I got a fatal error,

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function is_multisite() in /home/flitetou/public_html/wp-includes/default-constants.php on line 20

    So now I have no way to get into the website and no way to get into WP-admin.

    I have limited knowledge about this stuff so explain a fix for me in very simplistic terms.

    Another component on my Fatal error, I do carry the software on my system. I am set up with an associate’s web hosting page. Is this a bigger problem?

    Unable to reach associate so cannot have them fix this.

    Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

    Will this work is the files and WP software are on another server which I have no access too?

    I do not have the WordPress software on my computer. It is on my associate’s server which I do not have access to. He is currently on a honeymoon.

    Also, I do not understand phpMyAdmin. How do I get into this?

    Do you have access to the hosting account?

    When I had access to the admin area I type my domain/wp-admin and loggin.
    That is the only way I was told to access anything.
    Is there another way to get into the host’s server?

    Yes but you would need the hosting account details and that’s not something we can help with.
