Trouble uploading Templatic Website Theme Using FTP (localhost through MAMP)

Hi there,
I apologize in advance — am new to word press and am not a developer (1st time creating a website or blog of any sort). I was trying to select a video-friendly theme and found “video” from Templatic. I was trying to upload the theme to wp-content/themes directory by installing Filezilla. I am using MAMP to locally host and test my video website on my Macbook Air. In Filezilla, for the
Host I used local host (and have also tried the IP address when file sharing is on)
username I used root
password left blank (also tried root)
port I used 8888

I made sure that file sharing, FTP access was on, but even when it was not initially checked, I got the same message:

Status: Connecting to 127.0.0.1:8888…
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message…
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server
Status: Waiting to retry…

Any help to upload the theme to wordpress would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
