I run a film reviewing site. Recently, WordFence started acting up, I think after the latest update. I say ‘think’ because here’s what’s going on:

I usually stay logged in on my site, so I haven’t noticed the problem until a reader notified my that WF had limited his access to the site. That was a few days after the update. It worked fine for me, so I decided to log out and visit not as an admin, but as a “regular” visitor – and voila! The site is virtually inaccessible because of WF.

Namely, almost whichever page I wish to click on (including the second page and onwards in the pagination tab at the bottom of the site) gets me this error:

Wordfence has limited your access to this site

Your access to this service has been temporarily limited. Please try again in a few minutes. (HTTP response code 503)

Reason: Exceeded the maximum number of page requests per minute for humans.

I tried tinkering with the firewall options – didn’t work.
I tried disabling the firewall altogether – didn’t work.
Finally, I tried uninstalling WF – didn’t work!
I even tried logging manually to my web-host cPanel and delete the WF folder manually from the plugins folder – didn’t work!!!

I flushed the WP cache, cleared my browser cache, cookies, etc. – nothing works!!!

    The website is: https://coolawesomemovies.com/

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,

It sounds like your browser may have cached the 503 page or you may have a caching proxy between you and your server. You may also have a caching plugin that has stored the 503 response you received and just keeps serving it.

Once Wordfence is uninstalled, the code that executes the logic to determine if a visit is malicious and that generates the 503 response simply doesn’t execute anymore. So something else has stored the response and continues to serve it up. You need to find out what that is.

Let me know if you do and if I can be of further assistance. I’d like to know why this is happening so we can add it to our FAQ.

    Regards,

    Mark.

It’s very late here, so I’ll be online again in about 8 hours.

    Hi,

It seemed to be the WP Super Cache plugin after all. I had only flushed it, no completely reset it. But, after uninstalling another plugin, and seeing its effects remained even after uninstallation, I suspected the WP Super Cache.

So I disabled it completely, cleared it, re-applied the MOD_REWRITE rules that it suggested, and re-activated it – and now it’s fine. Though, what exactly did the trick, I don’t know. I’ve not seen similar problems reported with other users, so mine may just be an isolated incident.

Anyway, thank you for the assistance.
