[Plugin: Admin Menus Fixed] Ozh Drop Down Menu No Longer Fixed with Admin Toolbar Removal

I’ll look into it but, with so much functionality contained in the new toolbar, I can’t see the benefit in disabling it. The accommodation for that, that has been in the plugin since inception, is only for the earlier WordPress versions that an option in the core to switch it off. Now that the Devs had made disabling the toolbar a non-option and you have to use plugins to do it, it may be that there are no hooks available to sense its presence.

While I agree the built in toolbar is getting better and is more useful than in the past, the Ozh drop-down menu plugin has all the same functionality as the builtin toolbar and side navigation and takes up less screen space which is why I prefer to use that plugin.

Well, not exactly. The Toolbar has the capability for functions that do not appear unless they are activated by a plugin or core WP preference. In its default state, the Toolbar seems as if it’s pretty useless and may appear to be redundant. It isn’t. The old Admin Bar was another story and is why there is a false perception of what the Toolbar is and is capable of. If you remove it, you will cause loss of functionality of plugins that place menus there. Ozh’ Drop-down Menu is a replacement for the standard menu on the left side; not intended for duplication and removal of the Toolbar, as it doesn’t include most of those functions. Logout, for one. IMO, removing the Toolbar is a bad move but, each to his own.

I do understand that there is the “possibility” of extra functionality via the Toolbar, but my experience (~30 plugins), I have only seen plugins add them selves to both the Toolbar and the side menu and never just to the Toolbar thereby making the Toolbar redundant (at least for me). Also when you disable the Toolbar via Ozh Dropdown Menus the blog quicklink is added to the menu and the logout is added to the Users submenu.

Is this still something that you would be willing to look into?

Side Note:

I started a new blog and went to add your plugin and had the hardest time finding it on WordPress. The challenge was that inside the Plugin menu your plugin is listed as “Fixed Admin Menus” and on WordPress is is listed as “Admin Menus Fixed”. When I searched for “Fixed Admin Menus” the plugin did show up as the second results in the search but I passed over it because the name did not match. I eventually figured it out based on your name as the author. Just thought you might want to align the internal and external names to make finding it easier.

Actually, that isn’t always the case. WordPress SEO adds different menus, WP Super Cache adds a “Delete Cache” top-level and the update notice appears up there. That this is primarily a companion to Drop Down Admin Menu, and it doesn’t supply these (the plugin update bubble doesn’t appear any more—even with the ‘Hide “0” Bubbles’ unchecked), I leave it enabled.

The next version addresses this. For a while, Ozh’s Minimal Mode didn’t work. In the interim, the method of detecting the Toolbar display has changed. Now that MM is working again, I’m enabling a new detectioon that places whatever menus are displayed at the top of the screen. Unsure about the older versions and don’t have any installs that are that old anymore to test on, so may just make this version not as backward compatible as it has been.

I can look into that. Except for the fact that they aren’t showing for me at all; whether plugins need to be updated or not. I’m not getting icons on the Network Admin screen either. I’ve seen others report this on Ozh’s site, so know it’s not just my installs.

I’ll revisit the naming but the only place it appears in the other order is in the .php file header. The readme has it the other way, as does the directory name. There are two connotations of “fixed”. Depending upon the instance, the order changes to be more concise and unambiguous in meaning.

OK. Got new features in the latest beta. Now accommodates both Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu and AG Custom Admin. Nice plugin, BTW.

AG Custom Admin checks for Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu being activated and is therefore compatible with it. No conflict between whether Ozh’s or Argonius’s plugin (or both) is used to disable the Toolbar.

Try out this version.

ToolBar Removal – Disable – Admin Bar uses a sledgehammer approach through: remove_node, remove_menu, remove_action, remove_filter, wp_deregister_script and wp_deregister_style that does what it says on the tin; disables the whole darn thing. That this functionality is contained within Ozh’s plugin and AGCA, and this plugin is primarily a companion to them, there really isn’t much point in trying to accommodate TRDA. A lot of what is (un)done would have to be re-done in order to make it work.

I had “Fixed Admin Menus” 1.1 I installed and upgraded (I have “Easy Theme and Plugin Upgrades” plugin loaded) to “Admin Menus Fixed” 1.2 and everything is working great. I only have the “Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu” loaded and not “AG Custom Admin” at this point, but your “fix” works as expected when you select the Hide Header option from within Ozh.

I noticed the name change which I am sure will help people in finding and using the plugin.

I now as much screen space as technically possible when I’m editing pages!

Cool. Thanks for the report. My tests indicate that AG Custom Admin works but if you could temporarily activate it and check for me, that would be great. In the mean time, I’ll push an update.
