[Plugin: WordPress SEO by Yoast] Wrong Sitemap Paths for Categories

  • Hi there!

    I’m using Yoast’s SEO plugin for some days now and just figured out that Google Webmaster Tools shows lots of error messages. They come from wrong category names in the SEO sitemap, e.g. “example.com/android” instead of “example.com/category/android” (see here: https://mobiwatch.de/category-sitemap.xml)

    How can I tell the SEO plugin to “see” the correct category path? This category paths are coming from Word Press by default. But the problem might be caused by WordPress, I’m not sure. But when I’m adding a category to my menu navigation, these links also say “example.com/android” (without the “category” in it’s path). But those pages aren’t existing of cause …

    I really hope somebody can help me with that because Idon’t have a clue wthat to do!

  • From what I’ve been reading re: internal site structure there is a valid “SEO Reason” to have the /category/ stripped out

    I am also having similar trouble in that I have categorizes displayed in breadcrumbs but when a user (or Googlebot) actually clicks on those categories they get a 404

    I’m suspecting that the “Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL.” section located in Permalinks (assuming you’re using the most current version of the plug in)

    Yes, the “Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL” in my “Permalinks” was active. I set that check box off and in addition clicked “save setting” in the “Sitemap” section (that shall delete the cache, I read). But the siemap (https://mobiwatch.de/category-sitemap.xml) still shows no “category” field …

    Any other suggestions?

    If you still should have this problem, too: use the plugin “No Category Base”. This clears all “/category/” mentions, and than leave Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL” in my “Permalinks” in the SEO permalink section SET. So sitemap and real links are the same.
    At least for me it’s working and I hope that those error messages in Google Webmaster Tools will clear in the next days … ;))

    One more trick. I have a “sitemap.xml” but SEO looks for “sitemap_index.xml”.

    So I copied sitemap.xml and uploaded the same file as sitemap_index.xml.

    Everything seems to work with the two sitemaps.
