Newbie questions about offline Apache test install
-
I am “testing out” WordPress using the guide on this page, which suggests installing WP offline in a local (on the hard drive) Apache “sandbox.” I am entirely new to self-hosting and web servers in general, not just Apache, and am stuck on a point of the guide.
Under the section Install Basic XAMPP, I am having a little trouble with step 12:
Create a database. The name should match the one used in your wp-config.php file.
I have followed all the steps to the letter up to #12 but am confused by what to do in the Apache interface. In the “Create Database” dialog I am met with several options: At the top is a blank where I would assume the name of the database (in this case, wordpress) would go, but next to it is a drop-down menu that reads “Collation.” Under that are several checkboxes with names I do not understand, each one with an option “Check Privileges” at its side:
cdcol
information_schema
mysql
performance_schema
phpmyadmin
test
webauth
What do I do at this screen? What should I select under “Collation,” if anything? Should I check any, all, or none of these boxes, and if so, which ones? Is there a more visual walkthrough I can follow similar to the one at WP Codex, that offers screenshots of each step and troubleshooting notes about the various “hangups” one might face?
I have uploaded a screenshot of what I’m referring to, so that support may have a look. I am using Firefox (Waterfox) x64 v13.0 on Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64.
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this. I want to make sure I get things right “in practice” before going ahead with WordPress on my server. If anyone needs any more information, just let me know and I’ll do my best to see what I can provide. Like I said, I’m new to this whole thing but not afraid to ask for help. ??
