• I have two websites that I want to remove from my WPMU install.

I think what I need is to be able to copy all pages, posts, images, themes, plugins etc from the individual sites on the network in some kind of backup.

I wold then create a fresh install of WP in a new directory, set permaliinks and restore one of these backups.

Can anyone please recommend me a backup tool to do this with or another way that works.

I’m pulling my hair out here!

There are paid products like backupbuddy, but really … Unless the new directory is the same name as the old, I would install WP in that new directory, export/import, and then delete the old.

Heck even if it is, do that, and then you can just move the new WP single install.

How would you get all the images across?

Provided they’re attached to the posts, when you import WP into a new install, it does pull the images over ??

You can always test it once to be sure.

Are you talking about the basic Tools > Import/Export or another import export?
I have tried using this one and the images did not come across.

    I’m talking about Tools > Import/Export, yes.

If you check the box to import pictures, it works fine.

    The export option says :
“This will contain all of your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, terms, navigation menus and custom posts.”

It doesn’t bring any of my media and I don’t see a check box for this.

The import option has the media checkbox.

OK, so the site I am trying to export from is a child site on a network.
There is no media option to export.

I don’t think I can import anything to my new stand alone site, unless I have exported them first.

    What am I missing ?

are yo utalking about the backupbuddy?

    No. no.

    1) Export. DO NOT worry about the media, just don’t delete the images ??

    2) Import. When you import, tick the box to pull in images.

Swear to monkeys and coffee, it works.

Right, I’m just getting into a bigger and bigger mess and I’m getting upset now, because it’s taking me so long and you’re making it sound easy.

    My site https://www.myparent.com has https://www.myparent.com/childsite_1/
I am traying to move childsite_1 to https://www.childsite_1.com

I have created the directory childsite_1 and removed the mapping of the https://www.myparent.com/childsite_1/

childsite_1.com is an addon domain of the hosting account.

Now when I switch to childsite_1.com it shows a 500 internal server error and when I switch to https://www.myparent.com/childsite_1/ it shows the install of my new stand alone site.

What it appears that you are saying, is that if I do the import I can click a check box to import images. Which, by the sound of it, are being pulled from their URL’s. The way my setup is at the moment, this could never happen, because the URL it’s meant to be pulling it to, is the URL it’s already sitting at (but don’t want it to be).

    I’m pulling my hair out.

    1 tiny step forward.
My directory for childsite_1 was changed to childsite_1.com (as written in the addon domain details) and I can now see the home page of the new stand alone site, however, if I try and login to this I get redirected into the childsite dashboard in the olf parent network.

    I’m goiing bald.

ok – I’d set all my domains up wrong in my hosting account.

Why ‘move’ anything? Map domains with a plugin.

    Thread Starter hkcharlie

    (@hkcharlie)

I had it all mapped before and it was fine for a while, but they need to be moved apart because my sites are all developing at different rates and in different ways.
It’s kind of like having a gadget that does everything. If one thing breaks, you need to fix it all. If you had individual gadgets and something broke, you’d only have to fix the thing that’s broken.

Anyway, since setting up my domains correctly, I’m a huge step forward now.
