• I had to delete and reinstall my WP install because of all the crazy characters that it showed. And now it is doing it again, and worse it is cutting off my posts so that it only saves a few lines of text.

So if I try to create a new post or update an old one, it messes it up.

I am looking for some other blogging software that is not so buggy. I am not a programmer so I cannot make tons of script edits like some people.

  • Crazy characters? That sounds suspiciously like you’ve set an invalid or bad character-set.

Care to share your URL so that we can see what is happening with it?

I didn’t do anything. I even reinstalled it again which changed everything on my theme and still it was cutting off the posts to only a few lines. I just moved my site to wordpress.com and forwarded the URL there, for the time being.

There were question marks, capital A s with a mark on the top and other strange characters, one looks like a mark for the European money, the Euro.

My other WP installations work fine, and I have made some modifications to them.

It has taken me several days of work redoing this one site, which could have been spent doing something much more productive.

Without seeing what’s actually happened on your old site, there’s not a lot that anyone can tell you. It’s impossible to say what is wrong when we can’t see anything to show us what is ctally happening.

If you moved the install to WP.com and there’s “strange characters” then I would think that it’s a database collation (the language setting that everything is stored as) issue where the settings are different between what you had running on your database and what’s being used on the WP.com database.

Again, this isn’t something that we can tell you. As your site is now on wordpress.COM you’ll have to ask there and hope that someone can give you some ideas.

If this is happening on that one site of yours only, I’d suggest that you disable ALL plugins and go back to the twentyeleven theme and see if that makes a difference. I’d be pretty sure that it would.

I did revert to the twenty-ten theme and the plugins I have installed are:

    AddThis Social Bookmarking Widget
    Add to Footer
    Akismet
    Cashie Commerce
    Jetpack by WordPress.com
    WordPress Importer

I will delete a couple of them and report back.

    Thread Starter okmike

    (@okmike)

I deactivated every single plugin except the WordPress Importer and still it cuts off the posts to only a few lines. So I went to update and told it to reinstalled WP and still it does it.

And you still haven’t given us any URL to look at so we can actually see for ourselves what’s wrong.

    Thread Starter okmike

    (@okmike)

How can you see what is wrong? All the pages have been cut short so there are no longer any strange characters to see. And I am not giving you my passwords, so there is nothing to see.

I am sure you have probably seen those same characters before on other sites. You can see them here:
    https://digwp.com/2011/07/clean-up-weird-characters-in-database/

But those instructions will not stop it from happening, or fix the cutting of the text.

OK, no problem. I never asked for (or wanted) username/passwords. I doubt that would help anyway.

There are other things on a public site that can give some indication of what’s going wrong, but obviously they aren’t important to you.

As you said, there is nothing to see, so there’s nothing that I can do to help any more.

    @okmike

I find your uncooperative banter and lack of patience and tolerance surprising! (Not really, just kidding..) ??

I’ve just been on both your sites. The old one, and the one now located at wordpress.com, and I don’t see any example of the issues you refer to on either site. I see “excerpts”, not “cut-off posts” but nowhere could I find any evidence of any character set errors on either site. I guess the burden of evidence is in your hands. A link to where the issue is actually happening would certainly be proof of its existence, and would definitely help folks who might have more experience than you, to lend a helping hand and assist you in solving your problem!

Thanks to all, but I consider the issue closed since my site was obviously the ONLY WP site to ever cut short the posts.

It’s most likely a function called get_the_excerpt, improper language support (review with theme and all plugins in use), an improper character code set in the db or your header, but again without a live site and a poor description or knowledge or said issue, we cannot provide support.

Too many variables…this forum can and does provide support well, but the OP needs to understand it.
