Admin area is blank after update, so can I change my theme through FTP?

    Okay, so I updated to the new wordpress, 3.4.1, and now my admin area is completely blank. I’ve tried a few fixes that were suggested and still: blank.

    I have a hunch that my theme (“Neutica”), which I like the appearance of very much (but there are customization limitations), is my problem. I have a hunch that, with a different theme, I could be back to posting- and looking for a new theme.

    Since I’ve been on the road for 3 weeks, I had to let the problem sit, but I am now ready to tackle it and want to know:

    Can I change to the Twenty-Eleven theme from my c-panel/through my server-FTP? Obviously, I cannot use my admin’s control panel since it is all blank!

  • Yes, just rename the theme folder. You will need to have a copy of the default theme (twenty eleven) for WordPress to switch back to it automatically.

    Well, I did it- switched successfully to the Twenty Eleven theme- but still no access to the admin area- still blank.

    Any additional ideas for how to recover access to my blog?

    (I’m lost without my blog!)

    Alrighty, I’ve got ‘er up and running, using the Suffusion theme, which seems able to handle all the latest.

    Here’s what I did: I disabled the plugins via FTP, managed to change the theme to Suffusion, re-enabled plugins via FTP, then re-activated them one by one, which is when I saw that a couple of my plugins were a problem and immediately caused the “white-out” effect, so I will be looking for alternatives to them, of course.

    Lots of work to do now as I get to know this new theme and learn to make it look the way I want it to, but The Shiny Butter Blog is back in business, so thanks much for all your help.
