Replacing a Current Site with a WordPress Site

  • I’m planning on building a wordpress site to replace a current site. The current site is not on wordpress and don’t yet have access to a cPanel or any such thing. I have two questions. First let me say I use Hostgator and GoDaddy. The domain is currently registered on GoDaddy.

    1) To change the host to hostgator I can just set the nameservers from my hostgator account on GoDaddy right?

    2) Is there anyway for me to leave the current site up while I build the new one? I’m confident I can get everything in place quickly enough but I don’t want the site to have much downtime. A perfect situation would be that the current site stays up until I’m finished with the wordpress site and then I set it to go to the wordpress site.

    you said that your registered the site with godaddy, so I imagine that the dns on godaddy are set to hostgator. I would log into that account and change the dns to godaddy and set up hosting with them if that has not been done.

    If you change your hosting, don’t forget to move your old files to Godaddy. Put these in the root folder and then set up a folder called wp and build your wordPress site there. I do this all the time for clients when I’m building new sites and wrote a tutorial about it here.

    Thank you for your response but I don’t think you quite understood. I must not have been clear with my hosting. I PREFER to use host gator. Right now the site is registered on GoDaddy but hosted through a service called called SalonBuilder. The nameservers on GoDaddy are set to salon builders nameservers. I have to set the name servers to go to my host gator account. I’m wondering if I can host it to Hostgator just by changing the name servers from salonbuilders nameservers to hostgators nameservers. Sorry of I wasn’t clear, I’m new to this. Thank you.

    You would be better off going in your Godaddy account and set the dns to hostgator.

    Just to clarify setting the dns is the same thing as setting the name servers, yes?

    Yes, dns == name servers.

    For hostgator, I think it’s

    ns1.hostgator.com
    ns2.hostgator.com

    Thanks, yeah I’ve set hostgator name servers on my other sites. Those sites weren’t transfered from other hosting services like this one will be. When I set the Hostgator dns (hope Im using that right) the site will be down right?
