• I have to create a website for a client, he’s a drummer and he wants to promote himself. He gave me a rough idea of what he wants – here some examples (sorry for the links but it is just to give you an idea): https://www.peteraybiggin.com/,https://www.rodneyholmes.com/fr_home.cfm, https://www.brianblade.com/, https://www.drummike.net/ – and I was wondering what’s the best way to proceed.
Ideally I would like to code from scratch but I have never used wordpress so I am not sure whether this is possible or I have to select a template.
The thing is that I will only build the website for him, I will not maintain it, it will be him updating it and adding stuff (probably every week) to it
Could anybody suggest a good place to start with please?
    thanks

thanks it looks good but I might not have any left/right navigation, not sure yet.
So just to get it right, I have to choose a theme, I can’t create my own template I seem to understand, correct?
Once I have chose the template will I be able to write HTML, CSS and scripts from scratch?
    thanks

You CAN create a theme from scratch — but unless you know php, html and CSS very well and have time to learn how WP is constructed and works, it will be a very time consuming enterprise.

This will give you a starting place if you want to learn more about doing that:

There are also themes that have the basic structure set up but are very customizable — so you can modify them to a very great extent.

I personally create themes for clients from scratch. It is much less headache than trying to morph someone else’s theme to what the client wants. But just as Wpyogi said, you need to know your php, html and CSS very well. Personally, I don’t do design, I work with graphic artists and they do the design and specs and all I do is code. If you don’t know code and all you do is graphics, you might be better off creating a relationship with a coder, that is if your creating a theme from scratch.

thanks for that guys, unfortunately I don’t know php, only html css and javascript, so I will use some of the available themes. One more question, if I select a theme and then customize it, can I code things like navigations, scripts etc? When you said that some are highly modifiable, is this what you meant?
    thanks
