• I have used a custom post template to create coupons on my site. Currently, they are displayed by date in descending order. I would like to be able to display them by coupon type (electronics, home services, etc.). If I add categories for these posts, the categories also appear on my news blog, which is not desirable.

What is the best way to categorize my coupons and display them by category without messing up the list of news categories?

  • You may be able to exclude the categories from the News page by using a plugin such as Simply Exclude.

Thanks for the suggestion vtxyzzy. That would probably solve my problem on the news blog but I still need a way to display deals by category. If I create a custom field, is there a way to execute a shortcode to show posts that have the value of the custom field?

If you already have them assigned to categories, you should be able to select by category.

Are you using the built-in WP Menus? If so, you could make a top-level menu item by using a Custom Link created on the Admin->Appearance->Menus page.

Put a single hash mark (#) for the URL and ‘Coupons’ for the Label. Add it to the menu.

Go down to the Categories box lower on the panel and check the categories you want to show under Coupons. Add them to the menu and drag them so they are indented under Coupons. Save and done.
