How can I make permalink use H1 from a dynamically generated page?

  • I apologise if this question has been asked and answered a thousand times – my website support dude has gone awol and I’m having to figure this out myself.

    My question is about dynamically generated php pages from my website, for example (apologies if posting links is considered bad)
    https://darwinholidayapartments.com/accommodation/property?pid=5575

    I want instead of /propery?pid=5575, to use the H1 that is generated by the page template (which happens to be the property name), so in this case the permalink (or canonical link? I’m not sure ….) should be
    https://darwinholidayapartments.com/accommodation/absolute-waterline-executive-apartment

    (or even better, without the /accommodation/ in the middle.

    Does anyone know how to make this happen? I have installed All in One SEO plugin and tried various things with canonical links and permalinks but just can’t seem to figure it out. I’m sure it’s a really simple thing….. if you have time to help me out with this I would *sincerely* appreciate it ??

  • Log into your admin area and go to Settings->Permalinks on the left hand side. What do you see in the input text field in the Custom Structure row or on this page which radio button is selected (Default, Day and Name, etc)?

    Thanks for reply. In custom structure I just see /%postname%, which is fine for all the static pages, but not for the dynamically generated pages.

    The dynamically generated work like this – customer queries a property, that property has a unique code (say 5575), the template is populated based on the unique code(from data in a MYSQL databased) with information about that property.

    I was wondering if in custom structure I could use %H1% or some such, but realise this isn’t a valid permalink tag.

    Unfortunately this is something that a developer would have to look into and fix as it appears to be a custom piece of code that is used to query the property data. Did your current though AWOL support guy configure this setup or was it another person?

    No, it was my original website developer who did say at the time “it can’t be done” when I asked about changing /?pid=nnnn to property name. I have seen it done on another (competitor / copycat) site but can’t for the life of me figure out how. I can ftp in and change things, but I don’t really know what I’m doing so don’t want to screw things up.

    Jarret, just to clarify, are you saying that this can’t be done either through regular “permalink” custom structure, or through something like All In One SEO?

    It could be done if properly coded so not sure why you were told otherwise.

    I cannot guarantee it 100% but from what I know and what I can see this is a custom setup. Meaning that no you cannot make any changes through the regular Settings->Permalink screen or with the All In One SEO plugin.

    Thanks heaps Jarret. I think I will go find me a new website developer/support person and see if they can re-code to make it happen. Have a lovely day / night wherever you are.
