Credit Card Payment (without using a gateway)

I would like to know if its possible and safe to setup credit card payment direct from my website and stay away from payment gateways.

I will be using WP E-Commerce.

Website I’m redesigning are running SSL Comodo and are not using third party payment gateways.

Which would be the best plan of action, keep there current setup or can someone send me in the right direction.

I’m trying to find the cost effective set-up and not so complicated.

I’m not the best with setting up databases.
