The [_remote_ip] special mail tag does a similar job for user IP address. You can use modules/special-mail-tags.php as a reference and make your own filter function for getting the operating system and browser information.

You can add the code outside the plugin’s folder, for example, in your theme’s functions.php.

Sorry, no, I didn’t end up pursuing this further. I just ended up asking the user for it in the form.

I was thinking of that as an option, but I’m unsure if whoever is filling it out will know the difference between ie7, 8 and 9 :/

the way that was suggested above should work, I think. we were just in the middle of changing a lot of other things about the site at the time, and we didn’t get to trying it
