Connect custom post types

I’m looking for a way to connect my custom post types.
I have one post type for artists, with information about the artist, a picture, some links, etc.
The other post type is releases, which has it’s own information as well.

My google-skills don’t give me anything this time, but what I want to do:
Whenever I create a new release, I want to select the artists who are on the release (I prefer showing all artists with their own checkbox so I can select one or multiple).
But if I edit an artist, I want to see on what releases he has been as well on the artist edit page..

Can somebody please give me some pointers what I should/can do?
