    Based on the most common screen resolutions of visitors on my websites, the middle ground would be 1920×1080.

    You can also give the development version a whirl if you wish, which includes JS code to resize the image based on the browser window whilst maintaining the ratio (better than CSS alone can).

    When installing Version 1.0.25-dev39 it suggests I upgrade. Ignore?

    Yes, you can safely ignore that. WordPress has a little hiccup due to the “-dev39” attached to the version – once it says that version 1.1 is available, then you should upgrade ?? That will be the stable release.
