correct file permissions for host running phpsuexec

  • First the obligatory – I did this search

    and found one post not involving htaccess and since I don’t use the squirrellinks…er…custom permalinks, I don’t care about that. The one relevant post said basically everything should be fine as long as your file permissions are set right, but didn’t say what “right” actually is. So, now that I hopefully won’t get cussed and discussed for not searching properly…

    My host is upgrading servers Friday and part of the move involves changing over to running phpsuexec. I understand this is a good thing for some reason, but apparently it also means that having certain file permissions will make things not work right. So…could someone please correct me if these are wrong?

    The php files need to be set to 600

    The directories should be 755

    Setting directories to 755 will still allow them to work properly with the upload feature of WordPress and plugins that use it (like PhotoPress)?

    I don’t want to start a separate thread so hopefully someone in the know will run across this – what about CG-Feedread’s cache directory?

  • I’m with Site 5 on a domain or two – who I believe have php running as cgi too – and I have:

    .htaccess 666
    *.php 644
    /uploads directory 755
    /other directories 755

    If you do use 777, I believe the server throws an error straight at you.
