    Hello-
First time on any feed, so please excuse any discrepancies.

I have a client that I am building a new site (essentially changing the theme and adding content).

    Specs:
    1. Same URL, but moving to new host (moving to media temple)
    2. Want to keep every post and comment within blog without loosing the google “love”.
    3. Want to keep the current (soon to be old) site live while working on this new site (essentially new theme)

    Is it best to:
    1. Upload new theme onto their current server to keep posts and comments intact and then migrating the entire site to media temple?
Concern here: Is it possible to work on a new theme without “activating” it?

    2. Build a staging site on media temple and then transfer blog posts and comments and replace old site when new site is ready?
Concern here: since the url is the same, shouldn’t google still read the posts and comments as their original date keeping the momentum?

Thank you. Please keep answers very simple. I understand some of this language, but its still kind of new.

    Easiest is this:

    1. Install WP on the new sever, with no content (don’t worry, we’ll get there). You’ll probably need to use a TEMP URL (like domain.com/~username – ask your host what it is).

    2. Design it to be perfect.

    3. Export everything from the old site, import to the new one.

    4. Change the URLs in your new site to the real domain.

    5. Point DNS to the new server.

    6. Beer.

Thank you Ipstenu!! This seems to be the consensus on the best way to do it! I appreciate your response. I will be looking forward to step 6. ??
