Missing the RSS Links Widget from Appearance > Widgets menu in Dashboard

  • Hi all, I want to add the RSS button and text link to my blog so that others can subscribe merely by clicking on the orange RSS button.

    The instructions I have read in the Codex https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/rss-links-widget/ state that you simply go to your dashboard, then select Appearance > Widgets.

    Then they tell you to drag the “RSS links” widget to the sidebar, and that’s all there is to it.

    The problem is I am missing this RSS links widget, and don’t know why it’s not there to begin with in our install. I don’t want any plugins as I see other people suggest in the past to others, I want the widget like it’s supposed to be there.

    Does anyone know why I don’t have RSS Links in the widget menu there, and how do I get it?

    We are NOT using WordPress off the WordPress site, our blog is installed on our own server. And we did not use any of the themes, we wrote our own based off the included themes to make our blog look like our web site.

    Also missing from our Setup menu is the Sharing sub-menu, so now we cannot select any social networking sites to include their buttons either.

  • I have the same problem (no RSS Links widget) as well, brand new install, no idea why it is not there so very interested to see what the solution is as well.

    @[email protected]: It is impolite and contrary to forum policy to interrupt another poster’s ongoing thread with a question of your own. You do not have the same issue as the OP Please post your own topic.

    @jefflostroff: Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

    @esmi – thank you for your reply, however I did not interrupt the thread with a question of my own – I said that I have the exact same problem as the OP, therefore it is not a new question, it is an affirmation to the OP and others that the problem the OP is experiencing is not isolated to just them and that others have also seen the same problem. This type of information (affirmation), although not directly solving the problem, is useful in that it provides new information, i.e. in informing the OP that the issue is not unique to just their setup (e.g. file corruption, etc) as others have encountered the same issue therefore they can likely rule out those causes.

    Are you using the same version of WordPress on the same physical server hosted by the same hosts with the same plugins, theme & configurations as the original poster? No? Then post a new topic.

    Actually I don’t mind at all other people chiming in if they have the same issue, it could help them, or if them mention things they have tried it could help me. Folks, the first thing I should have mentioned is we do not have one single plugin installed, so there cannot be any plugins causing a contention here. Only Askimet, which comes with WordPress is present, but we never activated it, so it’s not even loaded.

    The new WP version is out this week, so maybe we will try a fresh download and re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress as mentioned earlier.

    I’d also like to hear from people who have solved this issue, because I can see three years of people posting this issue here on the forum, and have not seen one of them answered with a solution.

    This page is the first result if you Google “wordpress rss links widget missing”. Therefore I wanted to post the resolution here for others with the same query.

    The “RSS Links” widget is only present on WordPress.COM blogs. If you have your own WordPress installation downloaded from www.remarpro.com, then you will not have the “RSS Links” widget.

    It appears esmi failed to recognise that jefflostroff was talking about the wordpress.com “RSS Links” widget and not the “RSS” widget (with description ‘Entries from any RSS or Atom feed’) which is one of the default widgets.

    If you want the same functionality, you’ll have to install a plugin.
