I am taking over a website from someone and have decided to use WordPress as its replacement.
    I have a 123-Reg Domain and a VPS.

I have WordPress installed on the VPS and in the Advanced DNS Settings of 123-reg I have forwarded the domain to my VPS.
Locally on my computer when I click the address, I am getting the OLD website, NOT the WordPress site. This is the same on Internet Explorer, Mozilla and Chrome.

HOWEVER, When I browse on my Android Phone’s Opera browser, I am getting the new site. I have asked a friend to check and he is also getting the new site. Some people are saying that when they click it, they are getting “Page Not Found”.

Anyone know what’s going on and why I’m getting different results?
I have tried restarting Apache (Ubuntu). Since I am not able to get to WordPress locally, I can’t login to the Dashboard to empty caches or anything like that…

    Thanks in advance,
    A.

Sounds like a DNS issue, you and your friends may be hitting the old cached DNS name with the old IP address..

If you’re on a PC then as an admin run the Command Prompt and enter this command.

    ipconfig /flushdns

Also clear your browser cache and then try to revisit your WordPress URL.

On a Mac try using this command.

    https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/how-to-clear-dns-cache-in-mac-osx-leopard/

    See if that works.

Edit: Also when you do get to your new site, try resetting your permalinks.

Thanks for the quick reply Jan.

I have tried the flush on my pc and cleared out all browsing history.
The strangest thing is when I go to https://www.webpagetest.org and put in the address, it is bringing back a screenshot of the new website.

Is there such a thing as ISP caching?

This is so so confusing ??

DNS servers cache too, so it might be in your ISP’s resolver cache on the DNS server too.

What’s the DNS host name? I try to have my TTL set to 10 minutes days before a change for this very reason…

Note: This is why some people warn it could take up to 48 hours to propagate. Usually it’s just as long as the TTL setting on the DNS record.

I am starting to think it is the ISP DNS as I was able to use a US proxy to browse and I am getting the new site.

    Domain host is 123-reg.co.uk
    Website Address is https://www.xmtb.co.uk

Is there any way to poke the ISP to say hurry up :)?

The TTL on your record is 24 hours.

You may have a long wait… You can ask them to change it but if it’s already cached somewhere they can’t really do anything about that.

Dang. I changed it last night about 2000GMT so here’s hoping it’ll be on at that time tonight.
It’s strange though, that some people can get to the new version and I can’t.

How do you check the TTL entry? Is that against 123-reg or my ISP?

Sorry for replying back late. Work and on a Saturday too! ??

When I checked the DNS record I used one of the many web based DNS tools, particularly this one.

    https://www.kloth.net/services/dig.php

The output earlier gave me back this line for your DNS record.

    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
     ;www.xmtb.co.uk. IN	A

     ;; ANSWER SECTION:
     www.xmtb.co.uk. 86400	IN	A	31.3.227.142

If you check now via that site, the value will be less. That value is less because the TTL is cached on the DNS server that I tested from.

Hi I work for 123-reg, Ill resolve this for you in the morning.

Currently the 123-reg name servers are returning the ip address 31.3.227.142 for you domain name (including with www)
It looks like the DNS records are not entered correctly in the 123-reg panel.

This does nor explain why some people have seen the new site including you on your phone, it may be the correct records were entered which were picked up and cached for some, then the records changed back in error.

Whatever the cause no doubt we can resolve easily when I am able to speak to you and access you account to check the settings.

    Hey Olly,
Thanks for the reply. As far as I am aware the settings have now filtered through and the site is resolving as expected. What are the configuration errors that you are seeing?

    Thanks,
    Adrian

    Yes it’s all good.
I had misunderstood when you said “I have a 123-Reg Domain and a VPS”
I assumed you meant a 123-reg VPS, and that 31.3.227.142 was the wrong address.
I now realise that 31.3.227.142 is your VPS so it’s all working.

Hehe, thanks for the interest though. I have never used 123-reg before and was just asked to step in and help with the administration of a website.

    Thanks everyone.

Hi there. I’ve just set up my first wordpress blog site and I want to migrate it to 123-reg so I can use the domain name I’ve registered with them as my blogsite address.

I was told by 123-reg that I needed to purchase web hosting and follow the onscreen instructions until I reached the the box marked CGI Scripts. Apparently, in this box I would see the WordPress icon, which I would then click to install. But the only problem is, the WordPress icon isn’t there. I’m wondering if I’ve purchased the right webhosting package. I have the feeling that not all 123-reg web hosting packages allow you to migrate WordPress.

Any help on this would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Stephen
