move copy site for modification and move back!

  • Hi Folks
    really appreciate some advice…

    Background: we have a site https://www.bonfire.co.uk that needs the shop software updated to latest issue. However, when we and providers have tried all goes haywire!
    Questions: We dont want to have site off line for long time so obvious solution seems to be to copy site and sql db modify off line at leisure then swap back to replace copy.
    I have copied site and sql (i think!) but am worried of implications of moving site (rather than straight html site)in case i mess up links and change urls etc….. Also I assume copy of site will stay linked to original sql.
    The more forums I read the more concerned I become that I may miss somthing so straight forward advise really appreciated.
