Problems with opacity in a child theme

I am trying to alter the color of my sidebar through the css in my child theme. However, when I go back and look at it, I still need to DEACTIVATE “background: transparent” with Firebug in order for the changes to take effect. How might I permenantly deactivate “background:transparent” using the child theme css?
