Automatically Updating to WordPress 3.3.1 – Getting 500 (Internal Server) Error

  • Hello – I’ve had a WordPress site since 2011 (not sure what version I’m on now, but trying to do the “automatic update” to 3.3.1 and, after some time, get a new screen that says “500 (Internal Server) Error” (what I’m used to seeing – like “unpacking update” , etc, doesn’t happen)

    Not sure it matters, but I’m using my home laptop (PC), on a wireless home network, on Firefox.

    Any ideas? (I’m kind of a dunce, so if you could spell it out for me, I’d appreciate it!)

  • depends on which wp version you were on previously. if you were up dating a fairly older wp version to the newer 3.3.1 you may have plugins that are not compatible at this time, therefore you will need to reset your plugins and next install each plugin one-by-one until you find the culprit causing the problem.

    so.. are you saying that the new version is installed and you’re getting this error after some time online? If you’re getting server errors like 500 – it can mean several other things like.

    1) server is down
    2) your browser cache files need to removed – too old
    3) you have no connection

    Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    thanks lonnie! what i meant was, that normally when I do an update, I’m used to getting messages like “unpacking update” “installing update” etc on my dashboard. Now, when I click “automatically install” 3.3.1, the dashboard remains unchanged, the hourglass spins for a bit, then a new window opens with the error message – no install is accomplished.

    I’ll try the plugins – maybe that’s it (though I’m not sure how old my WP version is)

    okay, I deactivated the plugins and deleted all themes except Thesis – now I get as far as “unpacking update…” but then I get an error message that the automatic update failed, please try again…

    is my server just timing out? or?
