• I would like to know is it possible to use sub domains with wordpress, as i would like a all in one CMS site which works together so i was thinking

archives.myurl.com – for the blog section
forums.myurl.com – for the forums section
store.myurl.com – for the eccommerce section

and the main url for basic pages such as about us contact etc

i would like to be able to use different themes for different sections of my site as ive been creating my own themes with artisteer and i may need different settings for the different sections, like the bbpress forums ect

    anyone tell me how

Have a look at multisite with a subdomain install

Yes you can create as many wordpress site you wish in subdomain.

You can check into multisite setup ask your host if ok to use subdomain name in multisite. That way you will have install of wordpress.

so would that even work – having one user account for all 3 sections and would it be possible to cross widgets, say for the url have recent posts etc from the archives

Yes with multisite you can use one install one database and you as super admin can manage the sites from one log in.
You install plugins and themes as super admin and activate in network so other sites can use them.
As you will all three sites you will have drop down what site you want to make change.

You need to read from the link @cubecolour posted above and check all your options

    i set up the network

then created the sub domains with my hosting
created the links on the network

do i also have to upload a new version of wp to each sub domain?

No once you have network setup you selected as subdomain name just create new site as superadmin you do not need to install any more wordpress you will using one install.
You do not have to create subdomains in host account as wordpress will create folders for each site.
