Problem when looping posts

if this is a page template, you need to tell the loop to show anything else than the page – for instance by adding a a query before the loop:

Could you give me an precise example of a query and tell me where to add it in the example code?

I’m guessing something like this query_posts( 'posts_per_page=5' ); But where should it go?

I don’t get it. The wordpress tutorial on making a template with a loop, doesn’t say anything about this ?? Where to put the query? I’m not very gifted when it comes to programming, so a precisely example would be greatly appreaciated ??

I have one last question. If I want to sort the posts by rating or views (wp-postviews and wp-postratings). How should the query-string look like then?
