Achive pages 404 error

I’m getting a 404 error on archive pages. If I click on a category it will display one page of archives for that category fine. At the end the first page is a link to previous entries. When it goes to the next page i.e. /archives/category/general/page/2/ a 404 error is displayed.
Where should I look to troubleshoot this problem? What should I look for? Thanks in advance.
