Making custom menu item bold/italic?

Hello,

I’m trying to make menu items on a custom vertical menu have different attributes. Specifically, I’d like one menu item to be bold, but for some reason I can’t get it to work.

        font-weight: bold;

	background: #99BAC2;

        }

I have tried the above but to no avail, and also trying “text-decoration: bold;” which also didn’t work. Any ideas? Thank you!
