no text or buttons when editing or creating a post

hi all.
i’m not able to see any text when creating (or editing) a post. the buttons of the editor are missing too. if i highlight the text by dragging then i can see that it is there.
tried clearing the cache, disabling all plugins, reverting to the default theme and various browsers (with their cache cleared too). also tried re-installing wp 3.3.
i’ve seen other instances of this happening but none of the solutions have worked for me.
