Exclude category descriptions in sidebar only

I have some fairly lengthy category descriptions that I like to display on the archive pages. My problem is that I also display my category list in the sidebar and when I hover my mouse over the category name the whole description pops up. If a category description is not included I see “View all posts under ____” when hovering over the category name, which is really what I’d prefer. I looked in all my PHP files within the theme editor and can’t find the “View all posts under” text so I wanted to ask here to see if anyone knows where this text is. I figure that if I can find that text then I’ll also find and be able to delete the PHP code that calls up the category description. Unfortunately this will need to be changed every time WP is updated so if anyone has a better idea on how to remove the cat descriptions from the sidebar only please let me know. Thanks!
