The title pretty much says everything. The comments are are allowed on all posts, but there are no (visible) fields for visitors to leave any comments. I only have one page (About), where visitors can comment. I installed a fresh version of the Twenty Eleven theme, to make sure that my tweaks in the previous theme (mostly cosmetic, nothing major) did not mess up the site. The site is here. Thank you for any suggestions.

  • I am fairly confident that comments are allowed on posts and not pages with a default theme such as Twenty Eleven…what plugins have you installed/activated since creation of the site?

Thank you for your input SwansonPhotos. Here is the list of plugins installed and activated: Akismet, Counterize, LinkWithin, Page Links To, Shutter Reloaded, Simple RSS Feeds Widget

It looks like the plugin ‘LinkWithin’ may be the culprit…Did you notice the link to their site where comments should be?

I know many websites using LinkWithin without any interference with the comments section. However, I tested your hypothesis by deactivating LinkWithin and I still cannot see the comment section. Do you think it is worth completely uninstalling the plugin to make sure?

Later Edit: I went one step further and deleted LinkWithin files. The comments section was still not there. After this exercise I re-installed the LinkWithin plugin.

It could be a conflict with another plugin. Deactivate all of them, including LinkWithin.

    Any change?

We are just trying to eliminate what the issue may be…

I deactivated all of them, still the same issue.

OK, can you go to the post edit area in your admin panel and scroll to the bottom of the post(s) and see if there are any ‘custom fields’?

    (@mgnelu)

    No custom fields there

My only other suggestion, after having checked all of the above, is to re-install both WP and your theme(s).

I always suggest manual installation through FTP, as there can be failures using the Auto Upgrade, re-install, or install features in general from the Admin Panel (which is typically web host/server configuration specific).

Please also review the requirements for WP 3.2.1

Thank you SwansonPhotos, I really appreciate your help so far. I will try the manual installation and let you know how it works out.

I manually installed the WP through FTP. Unfortunately nobody can leave comments on any post even though they are enabled. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

“Make sure to end your structure with either %post_id% or %postname% (e.g. /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/) so that each permalink points to an individual post.”

Please either change Permalink to default, or, change to:

    /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

Thank you SwansonPhotos, this solved my initial comment problem. I left the permalinks as they were because my internal links would not work with the new permalink structure. Any idea how I could change all my internal links without going through each individual post?

You can do a string replace in your MySQL database (which is an advanced topic and must be done correctly or you will have issues!)

I guess somehow, the ‘content’ of the post is ‘hard-coded’…it is always best to use the PHP functions to get post ids and url paths and the such as once a site is moved, etc…or a change, such as with permalinks, is done, you do not have these issues….

The problem as I see it is that you would, at this point, need to know what post of the form year/month/day (is there more than one post on an given day?) matches the slug….

    Try this first:

    Admin>Posts>All Posts>’Hover’ over a Post Title>Quick Edit>

Review the Text Fields, ‘Title‘ and ‘Slug‘. Are they of the same form, eg., is ‘My Post Title’ The Title and then, accordingly, is ‘my-post-title’ The ‘Slug? Or is the slug in date format?

Also, could you please use Pastebin, to share the contents of your .htaccess file?

    One more note,

    /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/

is not a proper permalink structure, see my permalink link above…

add %postname%/ is my advice and unless you have very many posts, fix the posts and slugs manually.

Using just /%postname%/ as your Custom Permalink structure will make you pages index better for SEO also… ‘/2011/12/03/’ for a search will find so many pages that your site post will be ranked around, eg, ~1.5 billion. I think I understand the idea of a baby blog having a date in the url, but it is not suggested to use just the date.
