How do I make my blog posts display on separate pages?

  • I think I’m having a problem problem understanding tags vs. categories.

    Lets say that I have 4 pages on wordpress. (just giving an example here) they are named home (the default homepage), dog, cat, and fish. I make post about dogs playing with cats and I want the blog post to automatically go into both the dog and the cat pages as well as the homepage where i’d like it to display all the posts. How do I do this? Right now I have a dogs page and I made a category named “dogs” and put the post into that category but its only showing up on the homepage and not in the “dogs” page.

    FYI. My pages are not actually “dog”, “cat”, etc. Just giving an example to try and make it easier!

    I’m also using the wordpress twenty eleven theme. When I switch to other themes the layout seems to not display the sub pages. Another question, how do I get my sub pages displayed on other themes?

    In a “standard blog theme”, all of your posts are displayed on your home page in date order. Posts filed under “dog” will also be displayed in the dog category page. Ditto for “cat”. Posts filed under both “dog” and “cat” will be displayed in both the dog and the cat category pages.

    Right now I have a dogs page

    Is this a category page. Or a Page of Posts (and – yes – they are quite different)?

    Is there something special I need to name the category in order or get it to display on all my posts, or are those tags?

    No matter what I change the tag or category name to it will not show up on that page.

    lol and just a heads up I was going crazy naming posts.

    Your two current categories – “saving” and “Uncategorized” – seem to be working fine. If you want t list posts on a static Page, see a page of posts.

    I’m not sure. ??
    Static WordPress Pages do not list posts by default. You need to code a custom page template to do that.

    I’ve posted on a bunch of other forums and all anyones telling me is to simply add the categories to the posts and they will post to the page… seems they werent telling the whole truth.

    They will post to the relevant Category page, yes. A static Page is entirely different.

    Okay so I figured it out finally. If I change the page template to a “showcase” template instead of a default template it’ll do exactly what I want it to do.

    Argh. Now its doing something really weird. https://runningwithdinner.com/?page_id=95 When I have multiple posts it is displaying them at the bottom of my other posts. Why is it doing this?

    Also how do I change my permalinks to be custom? For example if I kept the dogs page I would want it to be runningwithdinner.com/dogs

    No – that’s how the Showcase template works. It displays a featured posts section using sticky posts, another recent posts area (with the latest post shown in full and the rest as a list) and a left sidebar holding aside posts.
