Registration Spam has become a bit of a problem for on of my sites. I’m not asking how to stop it; I’ve read up on the various solutions, and I’ll be reviewing them to find the best option for my situation.

What I am asking is “Why?” What is the purpose of registration spam? They’re not posting comments, so nothing is getting indexed by the search engines or viewed by the readers. Finding the motive for spam is usually fairly easy, but this one has me stumped.

If they are quiet it’s OK. One problem is that you will have a hard job when trying to identify the legit users from the spam bots.

To avoid this mess you can install a challenge-response verification system. I have build Engage user & Anti spam plugin for comments and registration forms. It can be configured to appear only for registration.

There are a lot of ways to slow down spam (Bad Behavior, Cookies for Comments – These can both be used to stop registration spam as well).

Why? Eh. They’re looking for security holes, they’re testing for other (later) attacks, they CAN. Spam motivation is weird.
