  • You’re missing the final slash:

    /%postname%

    should be

    /%postname%/

I have used both and neither of them work. Any other ideas?

Have you double-checked that your .htaccess file is being updated correctly?

Now this is where I show my ignorance! How do I do that?

You’ll need to get yourself an FTP client, download .htaccess (it’s a hidden file so you need to make sure your FTP program is set to show those) and open it up in a plain-text editor and make sure it has this code block in it. If it doesn’t, paste it in. Now re-upload the file back to your server.

Be very careful when working with your .htaccess as it’s very easy to get mucked up and cause problems with your site. Make a backup copy first, before you start making changes, so you can revert back to it if needed. Make edits only in a plain-text editor – never in a rich-text editor like Word.
