This is something going on with the theme. I tried out The Events Calendar plugin and when I add the Events List Widget to the sidebar the default Categories, Blogroll and Meta lists are removed from the sidebar (this is the normal WordPress behavior).

Take a look at the sidebar.php file for your theme. To quote the WordPress Codex:

The information displayed in the sidebar is controlled by your Theme’s Template sidebar.php file.

Look for code similar to this (Categories and Blogroll shown in example below):

<h2>Categories</h2>
        <ul>
        <?php wp_list_categories('title_li=0&categorize=0'); ?>
        </ul>

<h2>Blogroll</h2>
        <ul>
        <?php wp_list_bookmarks('title_li=0&categorize=0'); ?>
        </ul>

Just identify the different template tags you want to remove.
