I saw there used to be a posting about this, but it’s closed and I can’t read it any more……………..so here the question is again.

I am using my blogroll from blogrolling.com, but I seem te have two problems:
    1. When I add a link with ‘blogroll this’ it doesn’t appear in my blogroll on my site.
    2. I really wany my links to open in a new window, but I can’t get that to work.

Anyone who can help me out here?

I’ve got a lot of other questions to, but not about this subject, so I’ll save them. *wink*

And know that forcing links to open in a new window is now considered VERY bad form.

And it is a rule of the forum that there is one question per post. Not always obeyed, but after a while you find your other questions aren’t answered and most people get the clue.

Ok, thanks for the hint about the amout of questions!

Why is it considered very bad form to force links to open in a new window?

Because you would be forcing new windows on your visitors. There is a possibility, especially with the new wave of tabbed browsers, that your visitors may not want to have new windows forced upon them. Also, more windows = more RAM consumption, and if your visitor is already taxing out their system, all it may take would be one extra browser window to crash his/her system.

    This might work for you.
    Manners, shmanners! ??

Just for the record, I’ve had numberous readers actually REQUEST that I force new links to open in new windows. That’s probably because most of my readers use Firefox and Safari, with their tabs set to open target=”_blank” in a new tab (as opposed to a new window).

    Hi,

the “bad taste” is an invention.

It may have been considered bad taste for a while somewhen in the past, when most advertising still was done through popups, but over the last 2-3 years it has practically become general webuser’s standard for off(own)site links. People expect it, many if not most want it, because they dislike the rightclicking procedure and because it emulates normal reading of several books at the same time.

You’ll find the _blank attribute on sites ranging from simple user sites and blogs over medium sized encyclopedic, scientific sites up to huge portals or sports sites.

Which means, just as with Mr. von Knigge, people coming along in masses usually have their own way of defining what is in their bad taste or not.

The thing to know is that your XHTML won’t validate when you use it, as the webgurus still try to twist your arm on this. Well, I’m sure _blank will stay with us a while longer and maybe they’ll eventually see the light.

Tell them if they are so fussy about how their tabs open to adjust their FF settings so that links open in new tabs!! There is a good FF extension for this.
