Dedicated internet server vs hosting

  • I currently have a network/multisite install using WP 3.2.1, BP 1.2.10, and about 40 other plugins & Custom Community Pro theme. We have an internal dedicated server but I’m having issues with our IT Department actually giving me access to the files on the server so every little tweak that cannot be made directly through WP admin takes me sending a request to IT staff and they have to do it. I’m the only one that really uses wordpress in our organization so the IT folks rarely know exactly what to do and I have to research and give them detailed instructions – frequently without actually being able to see the code in the files on the server.
    My question is this – I’ve read that a dedicated server is best for a multisite/network but considering the limit on my access to the server files – would a hosting service like Bluehost be better? Or should I continue with the internal dedicated server because the offsite hosting isn’t as reliable for a multisite/network?
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    You’re kidding… Your IT department won’t let you login via SSH to the website account and make changes?

    Ugh.

    I’d be likely to raise a stink with them. Even my stodgy company is good about getting us accounts with the access we need, and while I have to fill in tickets to report what I’m changing, I have access to administer my own stuff.

    @ Ipstenu – yes, our IT is pretty strict but it’s a government agency so I guess they have an excuse. Regardless of their security concerns, I need to find the best way to keep my WP site working.

    If their security concerns keep you from the ability to update your site, then offsite hosting will be the way to go… I’d bill back the cost of off-site to their department, mind you, and point out that you’re now trusting someone ELSE with security because they won’t give you access.

    Thanks. I was pretty sure that was the way I needed to go – and yes, they will be paying for the service and that point will be made. ??
