Add a link on my page – nothing happens…

All I want to do is add a link on my page to my original website. So I go to Links, add a link – – nothing. I go to menu at top: Add New > Link.Type in the URL, description, etc…. nothing. What am I doing wrong here? I just want to have a link on my page. Do I need to create a button first? Why is this so difficult?
