Slideshow slow and/or not loading…

The slideshow is really slow loading and/or doesn’t load at all. I tried using a different plugin for the slideshow and it works fine. I also heard elsewhere that NextGen really slows down the load time of your website and can really bog things down.
The images I am using are compressed for optimal loading time. Why does is the slideshow so slow and/or not load?
