Multiple Upload Directories for 1.5.x

I want to create multiple upload directories on my site so that users have the ability to keep image files separate from documents and podcasts. I’ve read the topic here about creating multiple directories in 1.01 , but I’m using 1.5. That and I’m unsure of how to use the “split( )” command that the author wrote about. Does anyone know of a hack or plugin that easily allow the latest build of Word Press to have multiple upload directories?
