• HI

I have just created a site (locally). I downloaded microsoft web matrix, chose wordpress and after entering a few bits of info it gave me a link to the dashboard in my webbrowser (localhost:etc etc).

So, I have made my site, pretty comprehensive, I have set my own domain to point to wordpress – waiting on that to finalise then I will upgrade etc.

Meantime, I am lost on what to do next. ie how to I get it from local to live on my domain?. I have looked at the various help sheets and other post on here but please bear in mind that I am a novice at this (although found the site, plugins, menus etc all very easy so I dont think I am daft – just struggling with this important bit!

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Lesley

HI, thanks for this – I have read this and many other wordpress pages but to be honest it makes no sense to me, I know that doesnt help with someone giving advice to me:)

My main area of concern is that the option – moving from one server to another – does this even apply to me as my site is local and dont know how to get it online at all.

What section of that help document should I be reading / following? Myproblem is that I dont see a section on there that relates to having it on local to taking it to a server – or am I missing something?

    Thanks

Then you need to start by registering a domain name and purchasing some hosting.

HI – I have an active site already and my own server (not just hosting).

I went through the process of changing the DNS settings this morning only to find that doing so also moves your email – I didnt see mention of this on the wordpress guide – so I have ahd to change it back.

Now I need the DNS A Record IP address so that I can do this for the web only – so that my mail will remain. Does this make any sense?

I cant find where to get this DNS A Record IP Address from.
    Thanks

    Lesley

These aren’t WordPress issues. For example, your email addresses or servers have nothing to do with WordPress. They’re hosting issues.

I know they are seperate ?? What I am saying is that my server company says that in order to point to wordpress – for web only – ie leave my mail as it is – I will need to know the DNS A Record IP for wordpress – apparently once I have this I can direct it to wordpress.

All the instructions on wordpress dont advise you that your email would also change whic, for me, is no good.

My server did advise that I could then log into wordpress and point the mx back to the original server but I am wary of that.

hence apparently my only option is to get the DNS A Record IP Address.

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks

It sounds like your host doesn’t know what WordPress is. WordPress consists of a bunch of PHP scripts that work with a backend database. All this stuff is hosted on a server.

When you installed WebMatrix, it set up the whole lot onto your own computer, so your computer is acting as a local web server.

To get it online, follow the instructions on the moving WordPress page esmi has already provided. Basically, you need to upload the files to your host, then import the database to your host.

Your email changed because you went to fiddle with your DNS settings. This has nothing to do with WordPress so it isn’t covered in the instructions.

If you want a new domain name for your WordPress site, you’ll have to register it and point it to your host’s servers, the same thing you did for your existing site.

    Hi – thanks for this.

Its namesco and they seemed to know what wordpress was.

I read them these instructions from the Map an Existing domain support on wordpress :

Instructions for Mapping an Existing Domain

Update your domain’s name servers to the following. Make sure to remove any existing name servers that are already there.
    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

Namesco did this over the phone with me and I thought, OK< just wait until it takes affect then Ill be able to buy the upgrade and do the rest of it.

However, I noticed my emails stopped working.

I called Nameso back and was advised that moves the emails also.

I said I didnt want that (and had made it clear to them)

They said I have 2 choices

POint the email back to Namesco from WordPress with mx
    or
Get a hold of the DNS A Record IP Address from wordpress then give that to namesco and it will point web only.

Can you see why I am confused – perhaps someone can see where I am going wring here?

    Thanks

    Lesley

You’re referring to the instructions at https://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

Notice that it’s for WordPress.COM sites, and doesn’t apply to www.remarpro.com self hosted installs. Since you set up Web Matrix and created your site that way, I assume that self hosted is what you’re trying to do.
See https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ for an explanation of the differences.

    That’s where you’re going wrong.

Now to make your site live, follow the Moving WordPress instructions esmi has provided. Basically you need to upload the files, and import the database while modifying the site URL so it’ll point to the right site.
