Host will not upgrade PHP or MySQL

  • I have a client asking me to upgrade her WordPress. I found she is currently at 3.0.4 and the automatic installer wants to install 3.2.1. The host of this website will not upgrade to PHP 5.2.4 or MySQL version 5.0 or higher. They’ve explained that there are too many people on these servers that would gain too many problems if the upgrade was done. So, now I am stuck.

    Is there an automatic installer that will take us laggers up to the last update of WP before you all jumped to the PHP and MySQL change over? If I could find that version of WP, I believe that would be 3.1.3, I could manually install except that this will screw up any further automatic installs that could be done in the future. It would be great if you added one more button to the Update panel that was for automatic install up to that change.

    If this is not possible, how can I get a copy of 3.1.x?

  • I doubt you are going to see support for automatic installation of anything but the latest version. That being said you can always get a copy of an old release and install manually.

    Note the caveat:

    None of these are safe to use, except the latest in the 3.2 series, which is actively maintained.

    Your client needs a new web host, as this will continue to be an issue for them/you. I’d be scared if my host said “there are too many people on these servers that would gain too many problems if the upgrade was done” – yikes.

    I have a similar problem with my company’s hosting company. No explanation given, just ‘we don’t plan to upgrade in the future.’ They told me that I can move the blog to wordpress.com and redirect the DNS. Unfortunately, that means losing the theme I designed. I had to really push for this blog in the first place, and I doubt the owner will want to switch hosting companies due to the fact that we have some sort of a phone plan with these guys.

    I was willing to stick it out with 3.1.4 up until we got hacked. Looks like my WordPress blog has to come down.

    I would ask the hosting company to move you to a newer server with the PHP and MySQL requirements you need. I work for a large hosting company so I understand both sides of the situation. Changing PHP and MySQL can break other customers websites, and cause more damage than do good.

    We move customers from time to time to meet their needs and you should not experience downtime in the process. Ideally, you’ll go from one server to the other. You may not be able to work on those sites during the process, but the sites will remain live.

    Thank you for the suggestion. I sent a request detailing my problem to my hosting company. Unfortunately, the response was that ALL their servers are running the same PHP and MySQL and will for the time being— too bad, so sad.
