Switch Page and Category Priority

I have a site and am trying to remove /category/ from the category listings. I tried both typing ./ in the category base and a plugin (FV Top Level Categories) and got the same result.

It works fine to create links in my menu and so on, but the page rewrite rules are finding similar but not exact pages and redirecting to that, so I’d like to move categories as a higher priority in the rewrite rules than pages. Can someone point me to this hook or filter if this is possible?

Wanted:

Get:
Link to https://northstarfamily.org/podcast/ that actually redirects to https://northstarfamily.org/podcast-going-with-jesus-authority/

This also happens in my “news” category where
https://northstarfamily.org/category/news/ works but https://northstarfamily.org/news/ redirects back to my homepage.
