[Plugin: Twitter Tools] Including author's twitter handle when auto-tweeting?

We’re looking to tack on our author’s twitter handle when the automatic tweet goes out at time of publish. I figure we can manually drop a @mention into the hashtags module, but I’d much rather have it be automated. I’ve got all my authors’ twitter handles saved as user meta, so I’ve got easy access to the names, I just need to figure out how to add them to the tweets that are automatically generated.
Anyone got any ideas there? I’d really like to give a shout out to my specific authors in the tweets being generated by Twitter Tools.
