    Dear WordPress users,
I’m trying to create a child theme in order to alter the twenty eleven theme (I’d like to change the title text colour).
Within ‘wp-content’ in ‘themes’ I’ve created a ‘twenty eleven child’ directory and as I understand it the next stage is to create a ‘style.css’ file (containing the relevant code which is available within the child theme WordPress tutorial), which should then be dropped into my ‘twenty eleven child’ directory.
It sounds so simple but I can’t for the life of me create the style.css file containing the code!!
I can create a new style.css file (by using the ‘new file’ button in the top left corner of cPanel). But when I then open this file and try and paste the code in, it doesn’t want to! It remains as 0 Bytes. When I click save, seemingly a new file is created, which I am unable to drop in to the directory. Thoroughly confused! I am sure I am doing something embarrassingly, obviously wrong. Any suggestions?
    Many thanks,
    Matt

  • Have you tried creating the style.css file in a text editor on your computer then uploading it via FTP?

The inability to create new files in cPanel sounds like a problem with your host.

    Hi Sixhours,
Your answer has turned on a light – I’m ashamed to say I’ve been saving the file on my computer and not uploading it to the server! Thanks so much for highlighting that.
Oh well, as a my teacher used to say, you can’t soar like an eagle when you’re a turkey…

I’m trying to understand how to create a child theme and need a little clarification. Do I have to log into my host gator site and do everything there, or is this something I can do from my wordpress dashboard?

I’m not HTML savy and the codex that comes up first on my search is more confusing than helpful.

If anyone can dumb it down for me I’d appreciate it.

Please start your own topic. Thread-hijacking is considered highly inconsiderate, and doing so on a topic marked as “resolved” is generally ineffective, as most people will ignore “resolved” topics.

Thought I did. Wasn’t trying to be inconsiderate or offend anyone.
