Recent Posts showing date title and excerpt

I am working on a twenty eleven child theme page template and I would like to be able to show last 5 recent posts in a horizontal line starting with date, title, excerpt similar to this website https://www.wilsonminer.com/. I thought it would be easy but have had a hard time.
