Access control plugin recommendation?

I’m searching for a plugin that supports a site where those who aren’t logged in don’t have full access to the content. [Nothing fancy – just logged in or not.]

– controls access to posts by category
anonymous users can see titles, but not the content of posts in the certain specified categories
– has some indication that support will be continued (# of downloads, current supported release, most recent update all “reasonable”)

Controlling access to files referenced in posts in the protected categories would be a nice to have.

I used David Coppit’s category access until support was dropped.

I tried Role Scoper, but the humongous number of options makes my head swim. As it says in the Role Scoper Faq, “[T]here are simpler permission plugins out there, particularly if you only care about read access.” — but I haven’t been able to find one that meets the criteria above.

So I’m asking here… What do you use for this fairly straightforward access control that I may have missed, either because it *does* work though it isn’t maintained, or I just can’t find it in the Plugin Repository.
