• Hello forum people,

I’m a complete newb. For a new business venture that my company is doing, our internet provider suggested we used WordPress, and a cool downloadable template, rather than building a site from scratch.

I am totally on board. How does that work?

I’m working on a MacBook Pro, and we have PCs around the office. I downloaded the .zip file to one of our servers, since it didn’t seem to work directly on a mac, and it would be good if other people could access it. (I think???)

When I open the install.php (from the MacBook), I get “Error: PHP is not running.” So, per instructions I opened wp-config.php, but I don’t know what information to put in there.

Am I completely on the wrong track? Would monkeys with typewriters be doing a better job building a webpage? Is Starbucks overpriced?

Is this something that my local web hosting company would install on THEIR server, and I would make updates from our office? I was under the impression it was a local software that we run to make build the site.

    I need some coffee.

    Thanks for your help!

Yes – although you can install it on a local web server.

Ok, so I just talked to the person who does our local web hosting (for our other website). All his local servers are Windows, and so this won’t work for him.

He straightened me out some. The answer? More monkeys.

I think I’m going to 1and1.com and going to start from there. Hopefully they take payment in bananas.

    Thanks, esmi.

Make sure you get Linux hosting (Windows hosting + WordPress is often just an exercise in frustration). Also ensure that you have PHP & MySQL 5 running do that you can run WP 3.2.1.
