    Hi,

I’ve been asked to manage a site for my university society so I built a new theme using Artisteer and uploaded it without problem. I upgraded wordpress to 3.2 when prompted in the dashboard and for a few days it worked fine.

Then the site began to work sporadically, often going down and giving a 404 error for all pages but I could still access the dashboard. Reinstalling WP seemed to bring the site back up for a time but then everything resulted in a 404 error including the /wp-login.php page. Eventually the login page started working again on its own and I reinstalled WP again which once more brought the site back up. Now everything is back to 404 errors (including login) and has not changed in days.

    the site url is https://casi.ecaconcordia.ca/

I have not made any changes since the upgrade aside from deactivating all plugins except 1. I’ve searched the forums and found some similar situations but could not find anything that has helped.
I have no experience with ftp, phpmyadmin or .htaccess files so please forgive my ignorance and bear with me as I may need some hand holding.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

  • If you switch to the default Theme (Twenty Eleven), do you still observe the same problem?

A very good question, if the login page stops giving me a 404 error I’ll give it a try.

I suspect it might have something to do with the theme but I wonder how that would affect the login page…

Also I know that the permalink structure is custom rather than the default (ugly) one, and I’ve read that it might have an effect so I’ll try changing that if/when I get access again.

You can revert to the default Theme via FTP, by moving/renaming the subdirectory that holds your current Theme.

    Hi,
If you have FTP access I have found that downloading wordpress 3.2 and then uploading it on to your existing wordpress install has helped iron out any problems such as 404 errors or any others from a previous install by upgrading automatically.

Just an update, as of updating to WP 3.2.1 I have not encountered the 404 issue. I was not able to gain FTP access and thus I’m not sure what the problem was, sorry if this doesn’t help anyone else.
