WordPress telling me broswer is outdated/insecure?

You are probably running IE in compatibility mode for IE6, 7 or 8. See this Microsoft Knowledgebase article to resolve: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/956197

If that isn’t the cause, something else may be manipulating your user agent. Do you use a proxy or other cloaking application?

Thanks – yes it was in compatibility mode.

However my whole site has gone down in all browsers.

Not that concerned at present because host had to upgrade the PHP to Version 5.3.6, so hopefully this may be reason.
